Thank you so much for subscribing to The Creative Life Is Possible. We’re new, we’re growing, and I can’t wait to see us make something that changes lives.
My dream is to build a community of people who tell the truth to each other—even when it hurts. No ego, no self-esteem, no fake praise. Let’s build a different kind of community together. Let’s make a place where we can talk about what it actually takes to make a living as a writer/creative.
I wanted a community like this so bad 9 years ago. I had just started writing and had no idea where to look. All I got were either sweet lies or totally ignored. Neither got me any closer to my goals. Well, the truth is hard, so that’s understandable. Very few of us make it. But, with the right tools, we can be those very few.
That’s where this newsletter comes in. If you’re here, you’re like me. You want to know what’s really up. You want to know what “all-in” (or all-out) really looks like. Well, I’ve learned a lot. Some of you know my story. I hope you can share what you’ve learned, too.
Here are a few hard truths that we are going to explore in detail in the coming weeks:
It takes time (overnight successes aren’t what they seem)
You have extraordinary math working against you—which you better understand
Any creative success will alienate friends and family (How to still give love)
But you absolutely need a community
Sales are not below artists
Do not resent popular art
If you’re like me, you’re breathing a sigh of relief. Finally, we can talk about the way it really is. Yes, it’s going to be challenging. But it’s possible for those who get the clearest (and have a little luck).
Let’s talk about some practical steps/homework.
Ask yourself a hard question tonight.
That’s it. When you lay down to go to sleep, ask yourself the hardest question you can think of. Something like, “What am I currently doing that’s holding me back?”
Email me back what you find out.
Make sure to reach out to other writers you know who are tired of getting lies about “making it.” Point them to this community for real talk.
Please, reply to this and let me know what you personally hope to see from this newsletter. Or, let’s set up a 30-minute call (remember, you get one of those a month for free) and talk about your vision for this community. I can’t wait to hear it.
Thanks for reading.
