Great essay! "Matter" definitely doesn't matter much, given that all the cells in our body regenerate every 7-10 years. We're essentially a new person biologically every decade or so, but we remain the same too.

And I love the idea that old books provide a sense of realness (perhaps because of the length of their existence).

As I suggested to Alina, the western canon is remembered for good reason. It formed our way of thinking. Reading it is like reading the handbook to your unconscious.

I recently read Paradise Lost by Milton and it's stunning.

Honestly, the western canon is impossible to go wrong with. It literally formed our consciousness. Reading it is like coming home and putting words to what was already understood but not said
